If you’re installing a new stereo in your car, then there’s a high chance that you’re a bit of an audiophile: you love music. This means that you'll want it to produce the best quality sound that you can afford for your cash, and, because you’re probably buying an expensive stereo, you want that stereo to be installed well, to avoid damage, and to ensure that it works optimally.

Five Questions to Ask When Buying New Car Speakers

New car speakers can really improve the quality of your in-car stereo system. It can make the whole experience more pleasant and fun. It’s especially important if you spend a lot of time in your car, as many of us do.

Choosing new car speakers is relatively straightforward. By asking and answering the following five questions, you will help to ensure that you buy the best speakers for your car.

Question 1: How much money are you willing to spend?Clearly, the first thing that you will need to do is to work out your budget. If you don’t know how much you have to spend, you don’t know where to look. Setting your budget makes it easy to narrow down your search. There are hundreds of different types of car speakers UK, so anything that narrows the choices will help you to make the right decision. It will also stop you from overspending, or from being bullied by pushy shop assistants.

Question 2: Are you prepared to modify your car?

The next thing you want to consider is whether you're prepared to modify your car to accommodate new speakers. It could be that you find the perfect speakers, but that they don’t fit in the space correctly. In this case, you will need to cut into the car door in order to create the additional space.

However, if this seems like too much effort, or it’s too expensive, then you can instead choose ‘drop ins’. As the name implies, ‘drop ins’ are speakers that simply slot into the old speaker mounts. These speakers have generic sizes, and are standardised across the UK market. For instance, a common size is 6 by 9s (which are actually, 6.5 inches by 9 inches, but that's not as catchy to say!).

Question 3: Do you want to buy separates or coaxial speakers?

There are two different types of speaker boxes, so let’s look at each in turn:

1.Separates (also called component) speakers: here, the tweeter (which produces high frequency sounds) and the woofer (which produces low frequency sounds) have separate cases. Effectively, they are two completely different speakers.

The benefit of separates is that they produce a far better sound quality than the coaxial speakers do. However, they have a big draw back when it comes to car speaker UK: they take up a lot of space. if you want separates, you need to have space in the car to accommodate them.

2.Coaxial speakers: here, the tweeter and the woofer are found in the same speaker unit, and effectively appear as a single unit.

The benefit of this type of speaker is that they fit comfortably in the car. However, they aren’t as high quality as the component speakers, and you can end up with some distortion and refraction at higher volumes. Nonetheless, modern versions are very good, and they remain the most popular choice for in-car speakers.

Finally, there is a third type of speaker, the subwoofer. This is always an adjunct to the woofer and tweeters, and isn’t necessarily essential. However, without one, you won’t hear the very low bass tones. The major issue here is that they are large, and very few car owners will install them because they take up too much boot space.

“WILL YOU PLEASE BE QUIET IN THE BACK!” In Car Accessories for Keeping Kids Quiet

As a family, we used to go on mammoth car journeys. Every year, we’d drive from the Midlands, in the UK, to the south of France. That was 11 hours in the car, each way. As you can imagine, our parents pulled their hair out the whole time. Sometimes, it was like a game of musical chairs; every hour or two, the driver (either mum or dad) would pull over, swap places and one of them would swap places with one of us kids too, so that we all rotated (expect the kids never got to drive, which was thoroughly boo at the time, but understandable). The reason for the incessant rotation was the grizzly arguments that happened every few hours.

Well, fortunately for today’s parents and kids, it’s not like this anymore. Today, there are loads of in-car entertainment options that can help keep the kids quiet the whole time. No more will families hear the familiar chant of ‘will you please be quiet!’ (-the polite version, we all know it’s not really like that) and ‘are we nearly there yet?’ (Er, no, we left two hours ago and it’s a 12-hour drive!).

Here, we’re going to take a look at some of the popular choices of in-car entertainment for 21stcenturyglobetrotters…and their kids.

In-Car DVD System
Any car audio shop worth their salt will have DVD systems for sale. These aren’t simple, single screen affairs. The top-of-the-range systems allow you to have DVDs in all of the headrests (or that come down from the ceiling) and in the dashboard in front of the front passenger (no DVDs for the driver, but with driverless cars, that’s never going to happen, because they’ll be no driver!). Thesesystems allow plenty of different configurations. For example, everyone can watch the whole film and the audio comes out of the car’s main audio system, or, each person can watch a different DVD and use headphones to listen to theirs; and with Bluetooth, they don’t even need wired headphones. It’s not just better than the olden days, it’s orders of magnitude better.

In-Car Audio System
A car audio shop will have a fantastic range of stereos and speakers, and you can make your car an incredible audio experience. There’s something about the acoustics in a car that gives music a unique feel – it’s probably something to do with the size of the space. anyway, if you love audio, there are some fantastic options that will allow you to pick up all of the subtleties of your music at volumes that would be totally out of order at home (seriously guys, think of your neighbours, some of you are insufferable!).

Detailed Satnav
This doesn’t sound too fun, but for the driver it can provide some entertainment (in the sense that it’s something different to do than the monotony of driving). In-car dashboard controls and satnavs have some incredible technology. You can do many things nowadays, such as spotting those pesky mobile speed cameras – yep, some satnavs update this in real time.
